Britain stands at a crossroads. While Norway has accumulated over £1 trillion in its sovereign wealth fund, the United Kingdom has squandered its North Sea oil revenues and failed to create any comparable national savings vehicle. This is not merely an economic failure—it is a moral one.A British sovereign wealth fund could serve multiple purposes: providing a buffer against economic shocks, funding long-term infrastructure projects, and ensuring that the benefits of national resources are shared across generations. The model has been proven effective not only in Norway but in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and numerous other countries.Critics will argue that Britain cannot afford to save when there are pressing demands on public spending. But this reasoning has prevailed for decades and left us with nothing to show for periods of considerable prosperity. The cost of not saving has been borne by younger generations who face a less secure economic future. The fund could be seeded with revenues from natural resources, windfall taxes on exceptional corporate profits, and returns from public land sales. Managed independently by professional investors, it would be insulated from short-term political pressures and focused on generating sustainable returns over decades. The time for debate has passed. Britain needs a sovereign wealth fund, and it needs it now. Future generations will judge us harshly if we continue to spend today what should be invested for tomorrow.
