Article Body (HTML)

Walk into the boardroom of any FTSE 100 company and you will find a remarkable uniformity of background. Despite decades of talk about meritocracy and social mobility, Britain's business elite remains overwhelmingly drawn from a narrow band of society: privately educated, university-educated, and connected through networks of family and school that are all but impenetrable to outsiders. The statistics are damning. Over 60 per cent of FTSE 100 chief executives attended private schools, which educate just seven per cent of the population. Graduates of Oxford and Cambridge occupy a disproportionate share of senior positions across finance, law, and corporate management. This is not an argument against excellence. It is an argument that excellence is being systematically overlooked in those who lack the right connections, accent, or postcode. The talent pool from which Britain draws its business leaders is unnecessarily narrow, and the economy suffers as a result.Interventions exist that work: contextualised admissions at universities, structured mentoring programmes, blind recruitment processes, and genuine commitment to diversity at board level. Some companies have embraced these approaches and found that broadening their talent base improves performance. But progress is agonisingly slow. Until Britain's business establishment genuinely commits to identifying and nurturing talent wherever it exists—not just in the schools and universities where it has always looked—the myth of meritocracy will remain exactly that: a myth.
