The green belt is under threat. Developers, many backed by wealthy investors and foreign capital, are lobbying with increasing intensity and sophistication for the relaxation of planning protections that have safeguarded Britain's most cherished landscapes for generations. We must not let them succeed. The green belt was created to prevent urban sprawl, to maintain the character of our countryside, and to provide accessible green spaces for the health and wellbeing of the population. These purposes are as valid today as they were when the policy was first introduced.Proponents of development argue that housing shortages demand pragmatic solutions, and that some green belt land is of low environmental quality. These arguments are not without merit, but they miss the fundamental point: once the principle of green belt protection is compromised, it cannot be restored.Britain does not lack land for development. Brownfield sites, underused urban land, and opportunities for densification within existing settlements offer enormous potential. What is lacking is the political will to prioritise these options over the easier path of building on green fields. The wealthiest developers stand to profit enormously from green belt release, as the difference in land values between agricultural and residential use can be a hundredfold. This financial incentive drives relentless lobbying and must be recognised for what it is: private interest dressed up as public benefit.
