Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is in advanced discussions with British authorities about the development of a network of artificial intelligence data centres across the UK, in an investment programme that could total £15 billion over the next decade.

The Scale of the Project

The proposed network would comprise at least five large-scale facilities, located in regions including the Midlands, the North West, and Scotland. Each facility would be designed to support Meta's expanding AI training and inference workloads, which have grown exponentially with the rollout of the company's Llama model family and AI-powered products.

The UK sites would complement Meta's existing European data centre infrastructure in Denmark and Ireland, but sources familiar with the plans describe them as qualitatively different — designed from the ground up for the unique computational demands of frontier AI rather than general cloud workloads.

Why Britain

Several factors make the UK an attractive location for Meta's data centre ambitions. The government's commitment to nuclear energy as part of the power mix provides a credible path to low-carbon, high-reliability power at scale — the critical constraint for AI infrastructure. Britain's fibre connectivity, skilled workforce, and stable regulatory environment are additional factors.

"For AI data centres, the key constraint is power — both availability and carbon credentials," said Dr. Helena Marsh of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. "Britain's energy transition, if it delivers, could make it genuinely competitive with the US for hyperscale AI infrastructure."

Regulatory Questions

The scale of the proposed investment will inevitably attract scrutiny from regulators, including the Competition and Markets Authority and the Information Commissioner's Office. Questions about data sovereignty, the processing of UK citizens' personal data, and the concentration of critical digital infrastructure in the hands of a single US corporation will feature prominently in any regulatory review.

For now, the discussions remain at a preliminary stage. But the scale of Meta's ambitions, if realised, would represent one of the most significant inbound investments in British digital infrastructure ever recorded.
