The annual review of FTSE 100 executive compensation has produced its most contentious reading in a decade. Seventeen chief executives received total remuneration packages in excess of £10 million in the most recent financial year, with the highest single package reaching an extraordinary £47 million — a figure that, before long-term incentive vesting, would have seemed fantastical in the British corporate context even five years ago.

The Top Earners

The highest-paid chief executive in the FTSE 100 was the head of a large British pharmaceutical company, whose total pay package — including salary, annual bonus, and the vesting of long-term incentive awards — reached £47.3 million. The payment reflects a period of exceptional share price performance driven by a blockbuster drug approval, but shareholder advisory groups have questioned whether the quantum of the award was justified even accounting for this performance.

The Debate

The publication of the data has predictably reignited Britain's perennial debate about executive pay. On one side, the argument that British companies need to offer competitive packages to attract world-class leadership talent in a global market for executive ability. On the other, the observation that the gap between top executive pay and median worker compensation has reached a ratio of over 100:1 in several major companies — a level that many argue is simply incompatible with a functioning social contract.

What is undeniable is that the structure of British executive pay has changed fundamentally over the past 20 years. The shift from cash-heavy compensation to equity-heavy packages has meant that in years of strong share performance, the potential windfalls for executives have become genuinely enormous.
