In MediaCityUK, the 200-acre development on the banks of the Salford Quays that began as a bold bet on the BBC's northern relocation, something unexpected has happened. What was conceived as a media district has evolved into one of Britain's most dynamic technology ecosystems, home to over 250 tech companies and attracting talent from across the north of England and increasingly from further afield.

The Numbers

Manchester's tech sector employs approximately 85,000 people and contributes an estimated £9 billion to the regional economy. The city is home to 6,000 tech companies, including 23 that have achieved unicorn status or near-unicorn valuations. Venture capital investment into Manchester tech companies reached £1.4 billion in 2025 — still a fraction of London's figures, but growing at over 40% per year.

The Advantage: Talent at Scale

Manchester's great competitive advantage over London is the ability to hire exceptional talent at salaries that reflect northern living costs. A senior software engineer who commands £120,000 in London can be recruited in Manchester for £75,000-85,000. For scaling technology companies, that cost differential can be the difference between profitability and loss-making growth.

The quality of the talent is supported by the city's universities — the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan between them produce over 8,000 computer science and engineering graduates annually — as well as a growing culture of keeping talent in the city rather than losing it to London.

The Companies to Watch

Manchester's tech ecosystem is deep enough that naming individual companies risks being invidious. But several sectors stand out: e-commerce technology, where several Manchester companies serve major global retailers; healthtech, anchored by proximity to the NHS' Northern hub; and financial technology, where a cluster of companies is building on Manchester's historical strength in financial services.
