The Rise of Family Offices in the City of London
Ultra-wealthy families are establishing sophisticated private investment firms at an unprecedented rate
The number of family offices operating in the City of London has grown by over 40 per cent in the past three years, reflecting both the creation of new fortunes and the increasing sophistication with which wealthy families manage their affairs. These private firms, which typically serve families with net worths exceeding £100 million, now manage a combined estimated £350 billion in assets.
Modern family offices go far beyond traditional investment management. Many offer concierge services, property management, legal coordination, philanthropic advisory, and even family governance consulting. Staff numbers can range from a handful of professionals to teams of over fifty.
"Running a family office is like running a small company," explained the chief executive of a prominent London-based family office. "We manage investments across every asset class, coordinate with dozens of external advisers, and ensure that the family's values and objectives are reflected in every decision."
The growth has created a thriving ecosystem of specialist service providers, from boutique recruiters who source family office talent to technology firms that build bespoke portfolio management systems. Professional conferences and networking events for family office professionals now attract hundreds of delegates.
Regulation of family offices remains relatively light compared to fund management, though the FCA has signalled interest in greater oversight. Industry leaders argue that self-regulation and professional standards are sufficient, pointing to the long-term focus and conservative approach that characterise most family office investment strategies.
