The Hamptons of England: Where Britain's Wealthy Spend Their Summers
Coastal hotspots from Cornwall to Norfolk attract the affluent during the warmer months
As temperatures rise, Britain's wealthiest individuals decamp to a select handful of coastal destinations that have become the domestic equivalents of the French Riviera or the Hamptons. From the rugged cliffs of Cornwall to the genteel shores of Norfolk, these locations offer privacy, natural beauty, and the kind of understated luxury that British money favours.
Rock and Daymer Bay in Cornwall have long been popular with the affluent, earning the area the nickname "Kensington-on-Sea." Property prices in the village rival those of central London, with beachside homes regularly selling for £5 million or more. The area attracts families seeking outdoor activities, fine dining, and relative anonymity.
"There's nowhere in the world quite like the British coast in summer," said a property agent specialising in the area. "Our clients love the combination of spectacular scenery, excellent food, and the ability to slip away from public attention."
The Norfolk coast, particularly around Burnham Market and Brancham, offers a different character—vast skies, salt marshes, and a slower pace of life. Suffolk's Aldeburgh and Southwold have also established themselves as destinations for the cultured and wealthy, with music festivals and independent bookshops adding to their appeal.
The Jurassic Coast of Dorset and Devon, the sailing waters of the Solent, and the Scottish Highlands also attract wealthy visitors, each offering distinct landscapes and experiences. Many affluent families maintain second homes in these areas, contributing to local economies but also raising concerns about housing affordability for local residents.
