Elon Musk's UK Ambitions: Tesla Gigafactory Britain Back on the Table After Government Talks — The Great British News

Elon Musk's Tesla is once again in serious discussions with the British government about the possibility of establishing a Gigafactory on UK soil, The Great British News can reveal. Senior ministers held private meetings with Tesla representatives in March of this year — talks that sources close to the discussions describe as "more substantive than any previous engagement."

What's Changed

Previous discussions about a UK Tesla facility stalled over a combination of energy costs, planning timelines, and post-Brexit trade arrangements. Industry insiders suggest that the current government's willingness to offer bespoke energy pricing agreements and fast-tracked planning consents for strategically significant manufacturing projects has reignited Tesla's interest.

The site most frequently discussed in government circles is a large brownfield location in the Midlands, though several alternative sites in Wales and Yorkshire have also been assessed by Tesla's property team, according to sources familiar with the process.

What a Gigafactory Could Mean

A Tesla Gigafactory in the UK would represent one of the largest single foreign direct investments in British manufacturing history. The Birmingham Gigafactory in Germany employs over 10,000 people and has become an anchor for an entire EV supply chain ecosystem. A comparable facility in the UK could trigger similar clustering effects.

"This isn't just about one factory," said Professor Andrew Leigh of the Centre for Industrial Strategy at Sheffield University. "It's about whether the UK can position itself as a serious player in the global EV supply chain. That question is very much still open."

Tesla's Position

Tesla declined to comment on specific site discussions, but a spokesperson told TGBN: "We are continuously evaluating opportunities to expand our manufacturing footprint in markets that are important to our long-term growth. The UK is a significant market for Tesla."

Whether a deal materialises will depend on a complex negotiation involving energy pricing, government support packages, planning consents, and the broader macroeconomic environment. But for the first time in several years, those inside the process suggest there is genuine momentum on both sides.
